Hari Bhakta Katuwal



 Hari Bhakta Katuwal was a prominent Gorkhali poet known for his unique writing style and profound lyrical compositions. Born on July 2,1935 in Dibrugarh Assam India he later migrated to Kathmandu to pursue his writing career after being invited by King Mahendra.


Under the pen name Prabasi Katuwal gained recognition for his thought-provoking poetry. His notable works include "Bhitri Manche Bolna Khojcha "Yo Zindagi Khai Ke Zindagi and "Samjhana." These poems touched upon various aspects of life ranging from love and longing to introspection and social issues. Katuwal's writing style was characterized by its depth emotional intensity and vivid imagery which struck a chord with readers.


In addition to being a poet Katuwal also dabbled in songwriting. His lyrical compositions were sung by renowned Nepali musicians such as Narayan Gopal Amber Gurung and Aruna Lama. His words resonated with listeners earning him a special place in the Nepali music industry.


Despite his literary success Katuwal struggled with alcohol addiction. His addiction often overshadowed his talent and left a mark on his personal life. Nevertheless his artistic contributions continued to inspire and captivate his readers.



Sadly Hari Bhakta Katuwal passed away on September 10 1980 in Assam India. A Hindu cremation ceremony was held and he was laid to rest on the banks of the Brahmaputra River. Despite his departure from this world his legacy and influence live on through his profound poetry and lyrical creations.



In recognition of his literary prowess the documentary film "Ani Hari Bhakta Farkiyenan" was released in 2015 shedding light on the life and works of Katuwal. Additionally a theatrical play based on his poems was staged at the Sarwanam Theatre in 2017 commemorating his 82nd birth anniversary.


To honor his contributions to Nepali literature and celebrate his life a life-size statue of Hari Bhakta Katuwal was erected in Jaigaon near the Indo-Bhutan border in 2021. This serves as a lasting tribute to a poet whose words continue to inspire and resonate with generations of readers and music lovers alike.
